Stages of Change - Contemplation
Once we recognize we have a problem, we progress to stage two of the Stages of Change model, the stage of Contemplation.
During this stage, people become more aware of the potential benefits of making a change, but are not yet ready or willing to do so because the costs of giving up the behavior seem to outweigh the benefits. People often feel stuck as they allow perceived barriers such as inconvenience, time, expense or fear/doubt to continue to be excuses. Therefore, it is important to explore options for facing these barriers. Consider these questions:
- What are the barriers today that keep me from change?
- What will it take to overcome these barriers?
- What things (people, programs and behaviors) have helped in the past?
- Who or what would help me at this time?
- When I break through my barriers, what are the potential rewards?
If you are feeling stuck in contemplation, reach out. FSAP can help you identify your obstacles and find strategies for overcoming them.
