Stages of Change - Precontemplation
The first Stage of Change is PRECONTEMPLATION – not yet acknowledging that there is a problem behavior that needs to be changed. Some people are unaware that their behavior is damaging, or believe that they have no control over their actions. Many are simply in denial.
Taking inventory periodically is one way to develop self awareness. Ask yourself these questions:
- How do I recognize that I have a problem … what are the signals?
- Have others expressed concern or disappointment about my behavior?
- Have I ever tried to change my behavior in the past?
- What are potential risks of my current behavior?
- Are there healthy alternatives to my behavior?
- What would prompt me to view my behavior as a problem?
After some introspection, challenge yourself to:
- Identify a reason for changing
- Seek further self-exploration
- Leave the door open for future self-discovery
