Stages of Change - Preparation
Once we commit to making a lifestyle change, we enter PREPARATION, stage three of the Stages of Change Model.
Preparation, the research and planning phase, is often overlooked. In our eagerness to conquer a problem, we may rush into making changes and ignore the process of developing a clear plan of action. Below is an example of steps in preparing for a lifestyle change:
Example: I Am Ready to Quit Drinking … What Do I Do to Succeed?
- Change your routine. Alter behaviors that trigger your desire for alcohol.
- Develop alternative social outlets and coping skills to manage stress. Take up a new hobby or exercise routine.
- Seek professional help to determine what type of assistance you may need.
- Choose a date to quit and write it down. Tell significant people in your support system about your plan.
- Write down your most meaningful reasons for quitting and keep this list with you.
- Ask a trusted friend or family member to remove the alcohol from your home.
- Carry a memento or a picture as a symbol that reinforces your need for sobriety.
- Plan to take your recovery “one day at a time.”
