Pedal for a Purpose! Join the AIDS Vaccine 200 and help Emory AIDS vaccine research
 For the past eight years, Action Cycling Atlanta has hosted a bike ride to benefit the Emory Vaccine Center’s AIDS vaccine research. To date, they have contributed over $500,000 to Emory with 100% of the funds raised going to Emory and the Emory Vaccine Center.

What is Action Cycling Atlanta?
Action Cycling Atlanta is an all-volunteer organization that produces the AIDS Vaccine 200 Bike Ride. Going into its eighth year, Action Cycling has raised over $500,000 for the Emory Vaccine Center for its HIV/AIDS research, with 100% of all monies raised by participants donated to its beneficiaries. They are cyclists from diverse backgrounds who are guided by the belief that collectively we can achieve more for the world AIDS community than any of us as individuals could even imagine. What, when, and where is the AIDS Vaccine 200?
The AIDS Vaccine 200 is a fun and rewarding 2 day, 150 or 200 mile ride (75 or 100 mile options each day – AND a relay option) to raise important funds for HIV/AIDS vaccine research being done at the Emory Vaccine Center. The ride will take place the weekend of May 22 - 23, 2010 heading east from the main Emory campus, traveling over scenic routes and through antebellum towns.
The first day ends at Camp Rock Eagle http://www.rockeagle4h.org in Eatonton, GA. The second day ends back on the main Emory campus for a victory celebration.
Is there a registration fee to participate?
Yes. The nonrefundable registration fee will cover a large portion of the expenses required to produce this event. All riders will receive an event t-shirt, rider SAG (support and gear) support including staffed pit stops, meals and entertainment during the ride, and accommodations Saturday night at Camp Rock Eagle.
As a Team Emory rider, how do I get reimbursed for the registration fee?
After you have registered as a member of Team Emory on the Action Cycling website (www.actioncycling.org), send an e-mail to vaccines@emory.edu with your name, e-mail address, phone number, and registration confirmation. If you have questions, contact Margaret Smith at msmit48@emory.edu or 404-727-9110. Team Emory riders must initially pay for the registration fee themselves and commit to the fundraising goal. A payment request will then be processed for you, and the funds will either be directly deposited in your account (staff and faculty) or a check will be processed (students and others).

Do I have to be an Emory University employee to join Team Emory and be eligible for the registration fee reimbursement?
No. All Emory University employees, Emory Healthcare employees, undergraduate and graduate students in any Emory University school, and Carter Center employees are eligible. Don’t see yourself in this list? Contact Margaret Smith at 404-727-9110 and discuss your situation.
I do not want to ride, but would love to contribute. How can I do that?
Make a gift to Team Emory in support of your colleagues at www.actioncycling.org. Also, crew members and other volunteers are needed to make the ride a success. Some volunteers commit to being part of the volunteer crew for the entire weekend and travel with the riders to Camp Rock Eagle and back. Numerous other volunteer opportunities will only take a few hours of your time. Register online as a Team Emory volunteer (Emory will reimburse you for the $45 overnight fee). The AIDS Vaccine 200 volunteer coordinator will then contact you to discuss specific participation options. Volunteers should follow the same reimbursement procedures as riders (see above).
Is there a minimum dollar amount that I must raise to participate?
Yes, but the level of fundraising required varies depending on whether you plan to be a solo rider or relay team rider. Volunteers are encouraged to set a fundraising goal, but it is not required.
Rider Registration: $85.00 (reimbursable by Emory)
Registering as a rider, you agree to raise a minimum of $500 in non-refundable and non-transferable donations by May 1, 2010 in order to participate in the ride.
Relay Team Registration: $85.00 (reimbursable by Emory)
Relay riders are groups of two to five people who decide to split up the mileage, split up any way you like. There is a $350 fundraising minimum for each relay rider in non-refundable and non-transferable donations by May 1, 2010 in order to participate in the ride. Relay teams will need to provide their own transportation to/from each relay point.
Volunteer Registration: No Fees unless you stay with the group overnight
Volunteers who stay overnight at Rock Eagle on Saturday night pay a $45 charge (reimbursable by Emory). Otherwise there are no fees. There is no fundraising requirement for volunteers, but it is certainly encouraged.
How does Action Cycling Atlanta utilize my contributions?
The Emory Vaccine Center is the sole beneficiary and funds raised directly support its world-renowned HIV/AIDS vaccine research program. Go to http://www.vaccines.emory.edu/ to learn more.
Will there be anyone to help me train for the ride?
Yes. Action Cycling has a very comprehensive training program. As soon as you register for the ride, you will receive emails about weekly training opportunities.
What is the AIDS Vaccine 200 course like? Are there hills or is it flat?
Good question. The landscape for the course is mostly picturesque Georgia countryside and quaint small towns. There are a few hills, but we will be cheering for you every pedal of the way.
