Inside HR…Employee Services and Employee Relations
Human Resources is a complex organization and often times, faculty and staff don’t know where to call when they need assistance. To help demystify some of our service areas, here is a description of two HR departments and what they are responsible for:
- The Employee Services Department handles the main phone line for all of HR, responding to the majority of Emory faculty, staff, student, and visitor inquiries. This department also oversees Emory’s educational benefit programs (Courtesy Scholarship and Tuition Reimbursement), the employee recognition and service awards programs, and the international hiring process for prevailing wage and LCA/Labor condition applications.
- The Employee Relations Department focuses on promoting good management practices and workplace behaviors, positive working environments and relationships, and on complying with HR policies and procedures and state and federal laws. Employee Relations is designed to assist individuals and departments on how to work through problems and differences to make the work environment more positive, enjoyable and less stressful. They also oversee and provide assistance with the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), other leave management, and unemployment claims. Contact Employee Relations when you have questions about performance management evaluation issues, reorganizations and reductions in Force, managing alternative work arrangements, interpersonal communication and other issues in the workplace.
