Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Enrollment

Each fall, Emory's Medical House Staff members can enroll in Healthcare and Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Accounts to set aside pre-tax dollars for healthcare and daycare costs.

The 2024 Flexible Spending Account Annual Enrollment Period is October 23 through November 6, 2023.

About FSAs

A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is funded with money you contribute on a pre-tax basis. You can use FSA funds to pay for qualified out-of-pocket healthcare costs for you and eligible dependents or dependent day care charges.

According to IRS regulations, each year you must enroll during this annual enrollment period if you want to participate in either a Healthcare FSA or Dependent Day Care FSA.

You can contribute between $200 and $3,050 pre-tax annually into the Healthcare FSA and between $200 and $5,000 in a Dependent Day Care FSA.  If you are married and file separately, you can contribute up to $2,500 in a Dependent Day Care FSA.

Grace Period

If you are a current participant, funds remaining in a Healthcare Flexible Spending Account after December 31, 2023 can be used during the grace period from January 1 - March 15, 2024. Reimbursement requests should be made either online or by submitting paper claims to Aetna/PayFlex by May 15, 2024.

If you currently have a Dependent Day Care FSA, you do NOT have a grace period in which to use remaining previous year balances. All expenses must occur before December 31, 2023 and claims for 2023 Dependent Day Care FSA must be filed no later than May 15, 2024 to receive reimbursement.

Steps to Enrolling in a FSA for 2024

If you wish to enroll in a Healthcare FSA or Dependent Day Care FSA for 2024, please complete the following steps:

Step 1: Enroll Online

During the annual enrollment period, October 23 through November 6, 2023, you can enroll online via Self-Service using any computer that has internet connectivity. You will need your network ID and password. If you don’t know your password, call 404-727-7777, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Step 2: Review

Once you have completed your enrollment online, use the left-hand menu to select Benefits Statements; then Choose Statement Type: Enrollment Preview to save/print a copy of your elections and/or changes.

Important Note: Your Confirmation Statement will be available in Self-Service in mid-December.

If you have any questions, send an email to hrbenef@emory.edu.

Check your Beneficiaries

Now is also a good time to check your beneficiary(ies). Emory provides you with life insurance benefits, so you need to designate a beneficiary, even if you do not sign up for supplemental life insurance benefits. While completing your enrollment in Self-Service, it only takes a few minutes to check and make sure you have the right people listed as your beneficiaries. While you’re at it, you should also take some time to check your beneficiaries on your retirement account with Fidelity and/or TIAA. Instructions can be found here (see page 8.)
