Responding to Critical and Traumatic Events

The occurrence, aftermath, and anniversary of traumatic events may evoke distress and the reactivation of a myriad of emotions for many individuals. It is normal for significant anniversaries of traumatic events to impact individuals in numerous ways that may interfere with their daily functioning.

We want to assure you that the Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) is here to offer support and provide guidance as we navigate these challenging times together.

FSAP Services

FSAP provides individual and group support sessions for faculty, staff and organizational units impacted by these challenging times. Contact FSAP at (404) 727-WELL to schedule a consultation for individual or group sessions.

FSAP also provides services to benefits-eligible family members. Remember, before a concern becomes a crisis, contact us for a consultation.

Strategies

As an acknowledgement that traumatic events can have lasting effects, the FSAP team encourages faculty and staff to prioritize their self-care and well-being as part of their collective response to impactful events. Here are some strategies:

  • Seek Emotional Support: Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or mental health professionals to share your feelings and experiences related to the anniversary.
  • Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practice mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, or relaxation techniques to manage stress and promote a sense of calm. Click here for weekly opportunities.
  • Establish Boundaries: Set boundaries around media exposure and create a safe environment for yourself by engaging in activities that bring comfort and peace.
  • Focus on Your Physical Health: Engage in physical activities such as exercise, yoga, or walking, and maintain a balanced and healthy diet to support your overall well-being. Click here for wellness support.

At the FSAP, we are committed to supporting the well-being of our Emory University community. If you or someone you know is experiencing distress, please reach out to us for confidential and compassionate support.
