Unpaid Leave
Emory offers several different types of unpaid leave.
Types of Unpaid Leave
Family and Medical Leave (FMLA)
If you meet eligibility requirements, you may take up to 12 work weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) in a rolling 12-month period for specified family and medical reasons.

Medical Leave (non-FMLA)
If you don't meet the eligibility criteria under FMLA, you may be eligible for unpaid medical leave.

Educational Leave
Emory offers an educational leave of absence without pay to support educational opportunities that enhance one's ability to perform his or her job more effectively, expand their personal and professional growth or pursue an Emory career path.
An educational leave of absence without pay (up to a maximum of two years) may be granted to regular employees working at least 20 hours per week, with at least one year of service with the university. Eligible employees are permitted to one leave every five years.

Seasonal Leave
A regular employee working a minimum of 20 hours per week may be placed on seasonal leave without pay for a period not to exceed 90 calendar days when there is a break in active employment due to lack of available work in that department. An employee who is on seasonal leave has the option to use his or her unused vacation leave, holiday hours or floating holidays, or take leave without pay during this period.

Personal Leave
A regular employee working a minimum of 20 hours per week may be granted leave for personal reasons with approval from his or her department and Human Resources.

Military Leave
In accordance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA) and Georgia law, Emory provides military leave to its employees. USERRA provides guidelines for employees who elect military leave and for the prompt re-employment of employees who leave to perform military training or service and who have completed their service under honorable conditions.
