Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance provides coverage for non-job related accidental dismemberment or accidental death.

About AD&D Coverage

The Emory Clinic provides AD&D insurance for all eligible members in the amount of $500,000. There is no cost to you.

This insurance pays a benefit in the event of a loss of life; loss of the use of one or both arms, hands, or feet; or the loss of sight in one or both eyes. Loss of sight means legal blindness. One-half of the full benefit amount is payable for loss of the use of one arm, hand or foot or the loss of sight in one eye. The loss must be irrecoverable.

Coverage for Spouse and Children

Eligible members may elect to purchase Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage for dependents and pay the monthly cost through payroll deduction. The amount of AD&D insurance for your dependent is equal to a percentage of your AD&D insurance as follows:

  • Spouse only: 50%
  • Children only: 15% for each Child
  • Spouse and children: 40% for your spouse; 10% for each child

In addition to the AD&D coverage referenced above, you may also enroll yourself, your spouse and children for coverage through Emory University. See Faculty Staff Accidental Death & Dismemberment.

Reductions in Insurance

At age 70, AD&D coverage for you and your spouse reduces to 65% of the original face amount; at age 75 it reduces to 65% of the amount of insurance coverage in effect immediately prior to age 75.

Eligibility

Benefits-eligible members of Emory Clinic scheduled to work 20 hours or more per week are eligible for AD&D. You are a member if you are one of the following:

  • Physician member
  • Professional member
  • Senior/Founding member
  • Key executive

If you enroll, your dependents are also eligible.

Coverage begins on a member's date of hire.

Cost

There is no cost for AD&D insurance. Emory Clinic pays for this coverage for eligible members. However, members electing coverage for their dependents will pay $5.60 per month regardless of the number of dependents covered.

How to Enroll

No enrollment is necessary. This benefit is automatically provided when a member is eligible. However, you must enroll dependents for AD&D coverage using Self-Service.

You should also designate a beneficiary for your AD&D coverage.
