Martha Shull, 30 Years
Tell us about your career at Emory.

Martha works as a post award administrator III for Research Administration Services within Emory College of Arts and Sciences.
I started in the Mail Room, date-stamping paper invoices as they came in. Eventually, I moved to Accounts Payable, back when they were located in the Administration Building alongside Travel and Payroll. One day, Lynn Kenney approached me and asked if I would be interested in working in Biology. She taught me everything I needed to know about grant awards, and I credit her for helping me transition into Research Administration Services (RAS). I have been with RAS since 2016 and hope to stay until I retire.
What are some of your favorite memories of your time at Emory?
Some of my favorite memories include walking through the rich history that Emory has to offer. Strolling the Quad and enjoying walks through Lullwater, all while taking in the beauty of our campus is my favorite. I cherish moments spent with friends and coworkers, chatting about upcoming events. Commencement and Staff Fest have always been highlights of the year.
What are some of the most significant changes you have witnessed over the course of your career?
One of the most significant changes has been the evolution of Emory's systems. When I first started, we were using DOS, and many of us were hesitant when Compass and EBI were introduced. At the time, we thought replacing the older system would be a nightmare, but we eventually adapted, and the newer systems have brought increased functionality and efficiency.

Is there anything you miss from back in the day?
While I enjoy the flexibility of working from home and definitely do not miss the commute, I do miss the personal interactions with colleagues.
What do you hope for the future of Emory?
I hope Emory continues to grow and provide more opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to engage in its incredible research and learning environment.
Anything else you would like to share?
I have been truly blessed with wonderful managers, directors, and coworkers who have encouraged me to grow and continue learning. I’m grateful to Emory University for allowing me to be part of this community. I encourage everyone to attend Commencement; it truly captures what Emory is all about.
